Texas Girls’ State Fair salutes young women’s exciting achievements.
The inaugural Texas Girls’ State Fair, part of the Institute for the Future program of The Women’s Museum, will celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of Texas girls age 12-18.
During the 2006 State Fair of Texas, the Women’s Museum will showcase the unique creative works, achievements and performances of more than 50 teen winners. These include poetry, dancing, music, science accomplishments, art, cheerleading and much more. Jo-Ann Stankus, Texas Girls’ State Fair Project Manager claims, “All it takes is one girl to have passion—such as math, history, gymnastics—and it can inspire other girls from many walks of life to see what’s out there for them. You never know where the next senator, researcher or novelist will come from; the Texas Girls’ State Fair could be the catalyst.”
A big push from successful women.
This is a fair within a fair. Scholastic will engage younger girls—and boys—with books and weekend visits from Clifford The Big Red Dog and Maya & Miguel. Women engineers from Lockheed-Martin will speak on career opportunities for women in the sciences and present a science show featuring Professor Smart. The Women’s Initiative Network from D/FW Airport will be on hand to encourage careers for women in the aerospace industry. “Common Cents” a financial management program will be presented by State Farm in the Institute for the Future computer lab.
The goal: a statewide phenomenon.
Best of all, the Texas Girls’ State Fair encompasses girls from the entire state. The Institute for the Future program began working with the Dallas Independent School District to identify standout girls in local schools. Now the word has spread across Texas. The fair hopes to expand its salute to girls 8-18 next year, and spotlight more academic achievements such as University Interscholastic League (UIL) winners in math, science and one-act plays.
“We are so proud of what these girls have done,” says Ms. Stankus. “And hope they see themselves just as successful as the great women in sports, arts, science and other areas profiled in our museum. As we focus on reaching a new generation of girls and women who can assume leadership positions, The Texas Girls’ State Fair will be a powerful force.”
